Legacy.

Never in my life
have I wanted to be a princess.
I don’t wait for knights
on shiny white horses
to come and rescue me.
I won’t hold my breath
for a happily ever after
fairytales speak of.
My dreams do not include
lottery winnings
and rich uncles
just hard work, sweat and tears.
I will not settle
for someone else’s happiness
and the lack of a lover
will not leave me incomplete.
My wish is not to be noticed
for the curves of my body
and the money I make
but rather for the complexity of my mind
and the strength of my soul.
These traits will be the legacy
I leave behind when my days have ended
and my aspirations achieved–
I will spend every moment
until that point
doing my best to live my life
not for how others feel I should

but for how I know I can.
